Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is perfectly positioned along the beautiful, crescent-shaped white sand beach of Kauna‘oa Bay, on the sunny Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island (official name: Hawaii Island). The resort is 30 minutes from Kona International Airport (KOA), and 40 minutes from Kailua-Kona, 20 minutes from Waimea and two hours from Hilo.

The Kohala Coast, on Hawaii Island’s northwest side, was the birthplace of the high chief Kamehameha I (thought to be born in 1736). It is known for its world-class beaches, as well as for cultural and archaeological gems nestled between centuries-old lava fields, such as ancient petroglyph fields and the Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, one of the largest restored temples in Hawaii.

Hawaii Island was created by five separate shield volcanoes: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa and Kilauea (which is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and continues to erupt). It is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, and is twice the size of all the other main Hawaiian Islands combined, with an area of 4,028 sq. miles measuring about 93 miles (150 km) across. The island’s population is approximately 185,000.
