The idyllic island of Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island,” is home to unmatched beauty. From picturesque beaches to active volcanoes, the Big Island has it all, and visitors travel from all over the world to experience life on this gorgeous island. However, it is important to ensure Hawaii remains a thriving community for years to come.
With that in mind, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has made concerted efforts to further elevate sustainability practices at their beach resort. Read on for more information on our decades-long efforts to honor, celebrate, and care for our island home.
Hawaii Sustainability at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
For more than five decades, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has emphasized the importance of sustainability on Hawaii Island. While many of our sustainable efforts are behind the scenes, there are some that you can see and even taste.
In 2017, we introduced on-property apiaries to establish honeybees in the resort area. Honeybees have a significant impact on the environment by providing pollination. The resort’s on-site flow hives are used for harvesting honey without disturbing the bees. You may have even tasted some of that honey in a dish from one of our restaurants; you can also find it for sale at the Mauna Kea Market within the hotel.
Speaking of a sustainable difference you can taste, our culinary team works hard to incorporate fresh, locally sourced ingredients from island farms, ranches and fishermen. Beyond the hotel, we also extend our efforts into the community. We held a fundraiser to support Kohala High School’s Farm-to-School Initiative Pilot Project. This initiative replaces packaged processed foods in the school’s cafeteria with made-from-scratch local food, helping the environment and providing a better diet for students.
Protecting Hawaii’s reefs and the life that lives there is another essential part of our efforts. Over 7,000 life forms make up Hawaii’s reefs, a quarter of which are only found in Hawaii. The Living Reef Fund is our way of giving back to the beautiful reefs found on the coastline we call home. This fund helps protect our reefs and helps ensure a thriving reef community for generations to come. By staying with us at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, you support The Nature Conservancy’s Living Reef Fund.
These are just a few examples of ways we strive to increase sustainability in our kaiaulu, or community. The actions we take today will have a direct impact on what happens going forward. For more information on our sustainability efforts on Hawaii Island, please visit our website.
